A Boat, Iguanas and Dinner Under the Stars

We boarded a catamaran bright and early Saturday morning for a scenic tour of Grace Bay Beach. Along the way, we stopped to snorkel along the barrier reef and then to explore Iguana Island, a private iguana sanctuary.

Back at the resort, we enjoyed the powdery white sand of the beach until time to ready for dinner at Seven, the resort's signature restaurant, which serves Caribbean-inspired cuisine.

The lobster bisque and snapper were amazing!

If we haven't said it enough - Seven Stars is a must-see destination. Any Caribbean bride should consider it for her wedding.

Seven Stars Resort is as beautiful in person as the photos from their website. Our amazing two-bedroom suite features a full kitchen, large living/dining area, a washer/dryer (how great to return home with clean clothes instead of a mountain of laundry?!) and a spacious balcony overlooking the ocean.

Today included a tour of a penthouse suite that can be used for weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners and other special events. The view is spectacular. And the room can be set up in a variety of ways.

Highlights of Aruba’s annual Carnival celebration include the Carnival Queen Election Day on February 3, where Aruba will select one of its most important Carnival representatives. Verdanza Hotel in Isla Verde has become the first hotel on the island with a charge station for electronic vehicles (ev’s). “At Verdanza we are proud of our efforts to ensure that the daily operation of the hotel is friendly to the environment. The decision to install a charge station was a natural next step in our commitment to contribute to a healthier environment,” said Rick Newman, president of Verdanza Hotel, adding that although Puerto Rico has not yet reached a critical mass in the use of ev’s, it is fertile ground for this type of innovation.

“The use of electric vehicles is on the path to become gradually more generalized, locally and internationally. The reduction of toxic emissions and, in purely economic terms, the reduction of the costs related to oil products, make electric cars an increasingly attractive option,” added Newman. “Car makers, such as Ford, have recognized this is an unstoppable trend and they have responded accordingly, developing ev’s as a genuinely viable product.”

In Puerto Rico, as in other jurisdictions, the demand for electric vehicles is directly related to the availability of charge stations that allow the consumer to travel with peace of mind.

In the United States, there are already thousands of charge stations available. States, counties, shopping centers and even large commercial chains such as Macy’s, Walgreens and McDonald’s have installed charge stations and parking spaces exclusively for electric vehicles.

In addition, to date 17 US states, including Hawaii, California, New Jersey, and Florida, have passed legislation that stimulate the purchase of electric vehicles. Likewise, Canada, China, Japan and 15 countries of the European Union offer diverse fiscal incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles. “This type of legislation in Puerto Rico would make electric vehicles more accessible to the consumer, while at the same time being a concrete action to reduce environmental pollution on the island,” continued Newman.

The charge station at Verdanza Hotel, also the first station in the Municipality of Carolina, is located in the parking area of the property and uses an industry-standard connector (J1772) which can be used to charge any electric vehicle currently on the market, as well as next generation models in production. “We urge others to follow our example to begin a proliferation of charge stations that will stimulate the legislators to consider incentives, and potential buyers to be stimulated by knowing there will be locations to charge their vehicles”, concluded Newman

This initiative by Verdanza supports the hotel’s commitment to environmentally—friendly practices. Other efforts include an extensive recycling program, organic guestroom amenities, the installation of devices that reduce the consumption of water and electricity, the replacement of traditional plastic ware with versions that are 100% biodegradable, and the collection, treatment and repurposing of rainwater as well as used oils, among others. Island Routes Caribbean Adventure Tours is proud to announce that Sydelle Gifford has been named its newest boat captain and the first female captain in Jamaica.

Her new rank as Captain of the Kool Kat Kelly was announced yesterday by David Shields, General Manager of Island Routes Tours. “We’re very proud to be able to announce that we have a woman captain amongst our Island Routes Specialist team. Captain Gifford is a true leader and a wonderful example of working to achieve your goals in life. On behalf of the entire company we congratulate her and we are pleased to be breaking new ground in the industry.”

Sydelle Gifford was born to the water, growing up on the beautiful beaches of Negril. Her father, Vincent, operated Honey’s Water Sports facility on Seven Mile Beach, and she spent all of her time there as a child when she wasn’t in school. In 1998, she went on to work at Beaches Negril in the water sports department and set her sights on becoming a boat captain; Sydelle took every opportunity to go out on the water with the catamarans and fishing boats from the resort. In June 2009, she began working with Island Routes Tours in the boating division. Her perseverance and studies paid off and she is now the company’s first female boat captain at the helm of the majestic 65ft catamaran, Kool Kat Kelly.

“It’s an absolute honor to have been named captain of the Kool Kat Kelly, it is something that I have always wanted and am grateful to know that I was able to meet the challenges and accomplish my childhood dream,” said Captain Gifford. “I also want to thank Island Routes for their confidence in me; I couldn’t have done it without the company’s support and the growth opportunities afforded the staff.”

Today we were on the road in the hands of our smiling tour guide Monica. It was great to see some of the island and the other properties. We saw the Villas at Stone Haven and Coco Reef. Both offer great accommodations and wedding packages. The day ended with a sunset cruise aboard Island Girl. Although the weather wasn't ideal we had an amazing time sipping rum punch and dancing to calypso. Just before sunset there was a beautiful rainbow and flocks of bird flying home for the night. The end of another beautiful day in Tobago.

Great start to the trip today! First off was the Romance Symposium put on by the Tobago Department of Tourism at the Vanguard Hotel. Beside the insightful presentations by Tom Curtin and Andy Ebon it was great to meet local vendors to see what they offer. Since we get inquiries from around the world looking for vendors it was invaluable to us to get some face time with companies we have only met online. Dinner was at Bonkers Restaturant which is at Toucan Inn and the food was excellent and the service excellentER! Very excited to see some of the island tomorrow.

From Barbuda to Broadway

As Antigua and Barbuda continues to position for increased growth in the wedding and honeymoon market, Barbudan descendant and Broadway performer, Tracee Beazer, returned to her roots to stage her dream wedding. On May 6, the accomplished actress and Paulo Barrett, a software engineer, tied the knot in a sunset ceremony at Villa Colibri at Pigeon Beach.

Tracee Beazer has starred in several Broadway productions including Tony Award winning musicals, Hairspray, Memphis and The Wedding Singer. She has also made several television appearances in Law and Order. Tracee and Paulo also launched the Barbuda Moons Romance Program during a media conference on May 12th at the historic Martello Towers in Barbuda.

"I couldn't think of a more beautiful place to stage our dream wedding and begin our new life. I always tell everyone how wonderful Antigua and Barbuda is and by getting married here I got the chance to actually introduce my friends and colleagues to what I consider to be paradise." Tracee said.

While having a drink in the lounge last night we met a couple from LA who travelled alone for their wedding. As any group of wedding journalist would do we decided to hold them an impromptu reception back in the Presidential Suite until way into the morning!

Feeling refreshed and still laughing about the bottles of champagne and dancing to Pitbull we headed out for a boat ride to Isla Mujeres. First stop was the dolphin experience where we got to swim with dolphins, manatees, sea lions, sting rays and sharks. It was a great experience on a beautiful sunny day. Then we were off to Isla Mujeres Palace which is one of the smallest in the Palace chain with 62 rooms. It is the perfect option of those looking for a total buyout of the property for a wedding party.

In the evening it was cocktails at the beautiful Beach Palace. One of the unique features of this property is that you can have your wedding on the rooftop and there is also an illuminated dance floor for a reception on the beach. Finally it was time to see the opulent Le Blanc Spa Resort. For the past few days it was spoken about as almost a mystic Mayan myth. So magical and majestic that words would always come short. From the entrance, to the spa, to the food, to the design, it was beyond even what I imagined.

The day began with the much anticipated Temezcal Mayan ritual. I will admit I had never heard about this before until I saw it on my itinerary and what an awesome experience it was! We were taken through a journey of physical and mental purification that left us all feeling calm and renewed.

One of the highlights of our next property visit which was Moon Place Golf Resort and Spa was that we would actually get to crash a real wedding! It was great watching the Palace wedding team in action. Their passion for what they do and their commitment to service definitely shows. Then we were off to meet the famous Marc Belmonte, beauty consultant for the Palace Resort salons. Having highly trained hair and make up services on all the properties is a huge plus for the brides. We saw a model having her hair and make up done and learned about how Marc trains his team in all the latest styles and techniques from Europe.

As much as I would have loved to head to the spa afterward I opted for a golf lesson on the beautiful Jack Nicklaus designed course. I was guaranteed 10 shots off my score card by my instructor so I am looking forward to using my re-engineered Palace Resort swing when I get home.

The weather is warm but very comfortable. Today we got to look around Aventura Spa Palace and Playacar Palace. It was great to see the wedding set ups and meet the wedding planners on each property as well.
The shopping district of Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen gave us some down time to find souvenirs and then it was beach time which we were all excited about. There is nothing worse than just seeing the beautiful water and not being able to enjoy it fully. A special thanks to the excellent pool staff that kept the margaritas flowing and we enjoyed the rays and great music. The day ended with a spectacular dinner in the Terrazza Italian restaurant. Does it get any better than this?

After having the banana pancakes at Sugar Club for breakfast...again...because they are so good we headed out to see The Inn at English Harbour and Carlisle Bay. They both offer luxurious accommodations and are idyllic for the honeymooner or just that romantic getaway.
It was a pleasure to be invited to take part in the Wedding Round Table put on by the Antigua Tourist Board. We presented destination wedding trends and got to talk to some of the vendors about their experiences on the island. It is always great for us to pass on what we are hearing from brides before and after their event to the people providing the services as it helps to improve the products offered. The last stop today was an outstanding dinner at Tides restaurant. The 'lobster rundown' now rates as the best lobster dish I have ever tasted in all my travel. The food in Antigua truly deserves its own trip and coverage.

Today I discovered the incredible Antigua black pineapple. As a self proclaimed connoisseur of the fabulous fruit I was interested to see if it was as good as all the hype...and it was! My dilemma now is how to get some back to Toronto!
It was another beautiful day today so we took the opportunity to visit Galley Bay, Sandals Grande Antigua, and Blue Water. It is great to see different properties at different price points but all offering great accommodations.

Diary of a Destination Wedding Photographer

Outside the arrivals door at the airport looking for the shuttle to the hotel. It is a beautiful day here, much warmer than Toronto! For a moment I pause as I forget where I am...ah yes...Melborne, Florida.

In my room on the sixth floor and checking all the equipment and plugging in the back up batteries. I have a beautiful view of the ocean and there are crowds of people walking, tanning and surfing. All of a sudden something glides my balcony. It is a pelican and it is huge! I suddenly realize I have never seen a pelican outside of a zoo before and they are beautiful birds.

At the rehearsal dinner and meeting the family members. It is an intimate wedding with only 27 guests of mainly immediate family and close friends. I try to memorizing the names and the faces while getting some candid shots of everyone mingling.

SATURDAY

Sitting on the balcony having a coffee with my camera in hand. I am waiting on the pelicans! They have been gliding past my balcony all morning along the same route. It is like there is an aerial highway that they repeatedly use up and down the beach and I count 13 in the air at one time. There are also gulls and something that looks like a hawk...must check online for confirmation.

Just had a look around the property and there isn't much to work with for the pictures. Not much for architecture and foliage so will need to be really really creative here. I find two palm trees, a textured wall, a fence and of course the ocean...I feel like this is a job for Mac Gyver! The sky is solid blue and I am not expecting any clouds for softer light either. I estimate I will have a large shadow right on the water's edge from the hotel later in the evening so I know I can get some good results from that.

Worked out my shooting order so laying by the pool getting some sun. Next to me is a man that must be in his eighties laying on a beach chair. He is wearing a shirt, shorts, black socks and sandals with his hat over his face and holding a walking stick while laying down. This is a scene straight from Weekend at Bernie's. He is asleep...I hope.

The wedding is running a bit behind as the musician arrived late. The bride smiles radiantly as she glides up the aisle next to her brother and I get a great shot of her mum wiping a tear. The light is really pretty at the alter and the green of the bridemaid's dresses is gorgeous.

Shooting on the beach with the couple and laughing as the groom mentions he once thought about being an actor. Suddenly there is a group of five pelicans flying in a perfect formation. Instinctively I aim and fire off about three frames and they split into two groups so aimlessly it must be choreographed. I really am in love with these damn pelicans! The shadow from the hotel gives me a soft ethereal light and I get some awesome shots of the couple playing on the beach. I am already thinking these will be great in black and white.

The party is in full swing and I am getting some fun shots of kids dancing. The music is great and everyone seems to be having a blast. I love weddings!

Back in my room and just finished the first edit on the images...really happy with the shots! Now about to back up the wedding to separate portable drives for safe keeping.

At the farewell breakfast saying goodbye to some of the guests I met last night. Everyone is still in great spirits as expected and there is hugs all around. I can tell this is a really close family. I wish everyone safe travels and then head to the buffet...the french toast is excellent.

Found a golf range 10 mins from the hotel so hitting a bucket of balls with a 7 iron. The pre-season rust is very evident but it is a great way to end the weekend. It is another gorgeous day here!

I am at the airport and ready for the flight home but finding out there is a mix up with my booking. My only option is standby and the flight is oversold by seven people. All I can do now is hope and smile.

Passenger O'Connor is a no show so I get their seat! I am being hurried down the jet bridge and being told one of my carry on bags must be checked as there in no space...cameras or computer...which leaves my side? Hmmmmm. I pull one of the drives and the flash cards out of one bag and put them in my pocket and say a quick prayer as the computer bag dissappears through a door. The adventure continues.

Earth Day is just around the corner, but the One happy island of Aruba maintains its eco-friendly initiatives and island-wide conservation efforts year-round to ensure that its beaches and natural attractions--considered to be some of the best in the Caribbean-- are preserved.

Efforts to go green include working with Green Globe/Earthcheck, a worldwide program that assists the travel and tourism industry to attain sustainability and respond to the major environmental problems facing the planet, including climate change, waste reduction and non-renewable resource management.

Of the 85 certified hotels in the Caribbean and Central America, 10 percent are located in Aruba including:

The reforestation of Arikok National Park is underway, with the planting of native fruit trees to re-populate the flora and fauna. A vast majority of Aruba's beaches are part of a $6 million dollar project to receive the 'Blue Flag' certification, with phase one completed and the beaches of Arahi, Baby Beach and Mangel Halto receiving certification last year.

Additionally, the Wind Energy Park at Vader Piet, which opened in 2009, has already reduced Aruba's dependency on oil by producing an average of 20% of the island's total energy.

Residents and visitors to the island can get involved in Aruba's environmental preservation through yearly events. The 18th annual Aruba Reef Care Project, a clean-up of the island's most popular beaches, dive and snorkel sites, will take place July 2 and 3 this year. The project helps raise awareness for clean marine environments and, with over 800 participants, it is the island's largest volunteer environmental initiative.

Aruba's 10th National Coastal Clean Up, taking place November 12th, is another opportunity to make a difference. The clean-up is concentrated on coastal areas throughout the island including the beaches of Arikok National Park, California sand dunes, Wariruri, Baby Beach, Bachelor's Beach, Boca Grandi, Zeewijk Beach, Mangel Halto, Santo Largo, Arashi, Anaboei, and the open area between the former Bushiri Hotel and the Tamarijn Beach Resort.

St. Lucia: Day 2

Ernie George, General Manager of Stonefield Estate Villa Resort & Spa, picked me up for a tour of Soufriere and the surrounding area, which included a closer look at the Pitons - not close enough to touch, but you can walk up the mountains if you so desire. We walked through Diamond Botanical Gardens, Waterfall and Mineral Baths

Before driving by St. Lucia Sulphur Springs to glimpse the volcano. We stopped at Jalousie Plantation to walk on the exquisitely beautiful beach (one of the few resorts with white sand) and drove by Ladera, one of two St. Lucia resorts that features open air rooms where the fourth wall is missed. We drove through the quaint town of Soufriere and ended our tour with lunch at Stonefield Resort.

I learned quickly how many wonderful accommodation and activity options St. Lucia offers. A return trip is in order!

Arrived safely in St. Lucia to warm 80 degree weather! What a change from cold, inconsistent North American days. My driver transported me 90 minutes to Calabash Cove, located on the northern end of the island. Look at this spectacular view:

After settling in, I enjoyed a delicious dinner at Calabash's Windsong Restaurant with Konrad Wagner. Sincerely, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and 100% guest focused.

What a trip!

I spent five days in the beautiful island of Curacao recently. This was my first time to the Dutch islands, so I was eager to see and learn about this unique island. My adventure started by being a guest judge at the International Carnival Queen competition which saw contestants from Curacao, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Surinam, Tenerife and from as far as Czech Republic. It was a well produced event that showcased the rhythms and colours of carnivals across the world. Much to the enjoyment of the audience Ms. Curacao came out as the well deserved winner.

We stayed at the gorgeous Hyatt Regency, which featured luxurious rooms and personalized service. This resort combined comfort and amenities in an idyllic location. Everyone working there was kind and helpful and made us all feel very much at home. Our group quickly became know as the "photo-shooters" around the hotel as curious smiling tourist would always stop to ask questions and check out the camera equipment.

The food in Curacao was definitely an highlight for us. We enjoyed the dinner at Governor on the first night where I had keshi yena, a tradition dish of cheese stuffed with chicken, tomatoes, prunes and delighful spices. At lunch at Jaanchie's we were serenaded by a local band of musicians as he dared to try iguana stew...and yes it does taste like chicken. The fabulous Bistro le Clochard set in a fort next to the water offered me a grilled red snapper I would not soon forget. Caracao is a foodie's dream location. From the fare at the small van on the side of the road I had at 1 am to the fine dinner in the upscale restaurants every meal was nothing short of outstanding!

Our major reason there was to photograph our cover and fashion spread for Issue 5. With the CB team arriving safely from Toronto and Atlanta with only one "baggage issue" we were good to go. We were very happy to welcome the additional two local models Alex and Stephany to our ever lively crew. On day one we shot around the Hyatt property till sunset and on day two we hit the road with our friend Eugene from the Tourist Board to discover the island and look for great locations to shoot. This shoot featured the gowns of Justina McCaffrey, Sandals Collection by Dessy, Anya Bridal, Sonia Noel and Maja Atalita. Stay tuned for what we know will be a fabulous fashion spread and the full story of our visit coming this July!

From now until the beginning of March, the One happy island of Aruba is in full celebration of its 57th annual Carnival. As opposed to the customary month-long festivities, Carnival this year is spanning from January into March and features a series of colorful and fun events for all.

Music and flamboyant costumes play a central role in events ranging from the Queen elections to the Grand Parades which wind their way down the streets of San Nicolas and Oranjestad to the delight of thousands of spectators. The Grand Parade in Oranjestad will take place on March 6, 2011.

“Carnival is one of Aruba’s most important festivities and each year we look forward to another island-wide celebration,” said Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes, CEO of the Aruba Tourism Authority. “This year we are doubling the fun with two whole months of festivities, events and Carnival surprises.”

The main attractions include the Carnival Queen Election Day, which will take place on February 19, where Aruba elects one of its most important Carnival representatives, the Aruba Carnival Queen. Aruba’s Lighting Parade will take place on February 26 in downtown Oranjestad and incorporates thousands of tiny lights into costumes, road pieces and floats, creating a dramatic effect to accompany the extravagant display. Set your alarm clocks at 4:00 a.m. on March 5th for Aruba’s annual “pajama party” Jouvert Morning in San Nicolas. An early morning open invitation to the island’s largest “jump up” is preceded by carnival enthusiasts from all throughout the island who follow the various live music caravans down the city streets until sunrise.

Carnival’s biggest celebration is the 57th Grand Carnival Parade, an all-day event, which winds it way down city avenues to the delight of thousands of spectators. We were very pleased to attend the relaunch of Air Jamaica service from Toronto to the Caribbean recently on a cold evening in Toronto. The event which comprised of dinner and entertainment introduced the renewed and redefined Air Jamaica. Together with Caribbean Airlines, they now form ONE Caribbean airline. The airline now offers the most non-stop flights between the U.S. and Jamaica with more than 160 weekly flights, including service between Jamaica and Toronto, Nassau, New York (JFK), Philadelphia, and Fort Lauderdale.

Much like Chatham Bars Inn, Hotel Guanahani is perched along the ocean, located on the north east side of the Caribbean island. To be eligible for the complementary stay at Hotel Guanahani, couples must hold a wedding at Chatham Bars Inn between November 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011; or November 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012. The wedding must have a food and beverage minimum of $25,000. Reservations are valid at the Hotel Guanahani during the months of May, June or July in 2011 and 2012 (based on availability) and must be used by the married couple. The stay includes daily breakfast, guest room charges, service and city charges, non-motorized water sports, access to tennis courts and fitness rooms, and transportation to and from St. Barthes airport. What made you decide to become a photographer?
You only live once! I want to remember every journey of my life, and those around me! Photos are the only way to truly capture what happened in a certain moment. Most places I go I have my professional camera, or at least a point and shoot. You never know when a moment is going to present itself, and I want to be ready!

What do you enjoy most about being a wedding photographer and why?
Being a part of the most important day in a new journey together! The wedding day is such an emotional filled day. I love being there to capture all the interactions between friends and family. I love seeing a bride walk down the aisle, and the joy on the groom’s face on the other end. Seeing the groom get emotional and cry on his dad’s shoulder cause he’s SO HAPPY! Seeing my bride get into her wedding dress and cheering with her girl’s because it’s all that she dreamed of. These are things I live for. I LOVE my job!

What are some of your favorite wedding details to capture?
Well, besides all the emotions that I just mentioned above, I really love my time alone with the bride and groom after the ceremony. I really love sneaking away on the property and just photographing the couple being MARRIED!!!! It’s such a special moment to get away from the crowd and let reality sink in that you are now Mr. and Mrs.!

On what Caribbean Island do you dream of photographing a wedding and why?
All of the islands are beautiful, but the one that I would most like to photograph a wedding on is Nevis. The landscape is just beautiful. The combination of lush green mountains and beautiful water would be the perfect backdrop for a newly wed couple!

What is your most memorable wedding photography moment?
I was photographing a beach wedding that unfortunately pushed the ceremony into an overhang. It was a bummer, but the ceremony was still beautiful. During the reception, the sky opened up and we had the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen, and had a DOUBLE RAINBOW above the venue. Not a moment I will ever forget, nor the couple!
